The Pantry is receiving over $17K in grant funds to help students who may be struggling with food and basic needs insecurity while attending ACM.
CUMBERLAND, Md. (Dec. 11, 2023)–Allegany College of Maryland received two grants to assist current students: $3,000 from Swipe Out Hunger and $14,574 from the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Hunger-Free Campus program. The grants are earmarked for The Pantry, the college’s permanent provider of food, personal care/hygiene products, and school supplies for students in need.
Allegany College of Maryland is now a Swipe Out Hunger campus partner.
Swipe Out Hunger is a leading nonprofit addressing hunger among college students. Swipe Out Hunger's grant will support the expansion of a Pantry outpost at the ACM Bedford County Campus. The grant funds the purchase of personal care/hygiene items for The Pantry, which is in the College Center on the Cumberland campus, and Pantry outposts at the Gateway Center and the ACM Bedford County Campus. The Swipe Out Hunger grant was funded by a gift from The Giant Company this fall.
The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) renewed the college's designation as a Hunger-Free Campus.
It also increased its matching grant to ACM by seven percent over its 2022 award. MHEC’s Hunger-Free Campus grant will continue the work of the college’s Student Emergency Support Committee to further reduce food insecurities on campus and increase student achievement.
The Student Emergency Support Committee oversees The Pantry’s operations and is co-chaired by Dione Clark-Trub, the director of Learning Commons, and Heather Greise, an associate professor of Academic Development. More information about The Pantry is available at www.allegany.edu/the-pantry
