Aspiring Young Mentors

Foster student success through a collaborative network of students dedicated to leadership, mentorship, and a growth mindset at ACM
Location: HUMANITIES (H) 66
What you need to do?


Required Qualifications:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.6 or higher
  • Be a current student at Allegany College of Maryland
  • Have successfully completed at least two semesters at ACM
  • Fill out the application and submit two faculty/staff names for recommendations
  • Agree to complete the Peer Mentor Contract
  • Complete required trainings prior to mentor sessions


What do we do?
  • Create a support network
  • Provide small group meetings
  • Provide Individual sessions between a mentor/mentee
  • Offer Programming each month

How do I know if I qualify for a mentor?
  • Are you a current student at ACM?
  • Are you struggling with adapting to the demands of college courses?
  • Are you having a hard time adjusting socially?
  • Would you like to meet new people and learn from returning students?

What are the Characteristics of a mentor?
  • Sensitivity to and interest in issues of diversity
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Genuine desire to help others
  • Mature, trustworthy, non-judgmental, and responsible
  • Enthusiasm for the college, students, faculty, staff, academics, and co-curricular opportunities
  • Active on campus and in the community
  • Effective study, organization, and time management skills

Where and when does the group meet?

The Unity Center - Humanities 66
There will be times that the space is open for students to walk in and talk with a mentor. Other times, there will be programming available (dates and times TBD).

Noteworthy Accomplishments of AYM
  • 12 students so far have been officially considered mentors based on requirements.
  • 9 of 12 graduated from ACM with an Associate’s degree.
  • 1 of those 8 graduates served as the first African American male graduation speaker at ACM.
  • 3 of those ACM Associate’s Degree graduates now hold Bachelor’s Degrees.
  • 1 of those 12 students will finish degrees in spring 2023 (Bachelor’s).
  • 6 of the 12 were Pathways for Success Students.
