State Grants Make Allegany College of Maryland Safer and More Sustainable

CUMBERLAND, Md.—March 13, 2025—Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) has received state grants to fund campus improvements focusing on sustainability and security. 

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) provided a $414,300 Maryland Higher Education Clean Energy Grant to ACM this spring. The college is partnering with Optimize Renewables to install photovoltaic solar roof panels and canopies while developing the local workforce through a new PV certification program, online learning portal, two PV internships and a Campus Clean Energy Master Plan. Installation will continue through 2026. 
MEA previously awarded ACM a $750,000 microgrid construction grant through the Resilient Maryland program in 2024 and a $100,000 planning and analysis grant in 2022. 

ACM also received a $375,000 grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission's Campus Safety Program in 2024, with implementation beginning this spring. The college purchased a Genetec Integrated Camera Control System for centralized surveillance management and comprehensive campus monitoring. Additionally, ACM is installing a controlled entry and lockdown system on access doors throughout campus, averaging $25,000 per door, to enhance security during emergencies.
