CUMBERLAND, Md. (Jan. 29, 2024) – Allegany College of Maryland was named a 2023-24 Voter Friendly Campus by the Fair Elections Center’s Campus Vote Project and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. The initiative recognizes ACM’s ongoing commitment through planning and implementation to help students overcome barriers to taking part in the political process.

The mission of the designation is to bolster colleges and universities’ efforts to help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process every year, not just during years featuring federal elections.

During the 2022 general election, ACM’s voter registration planning and voter engagement activities were overseen by the college’s Civic and Community Engagement Committee members, the College to Community Partnership Center staff, the Student Government Association, the Ask Every Student Leadership Team, and three student voter registration ambassadors. A creative twist on voter registration events, the group hosted a successful “Don’t Boo the Vote” Halloween voter registration event. A polling place was established at ACM in April of 2022.

Allegany College of Maryland’s civic and community engagement efforts have received multiple recognitions.

  • The college was named a Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting in 2022 by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
  • ACM appeared in Washington Monthly’s list of Best Colleges for Student Voting in 2022.
  • It earned a Silver Seal for Excellence in Student Voter Engagement, also from ALL IN Challenge, for having a 61% student voting rate in 2020.
  • Allegany College of Maryland received a 2020 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The institutions named Voter Friendly Campuses are a wide range of two-year, four-year, public, private, rural, and urban campuses, collectively serving over 3.5 million students. Notably, the list of designated institutions includes 49 Minority Serving Institutions, 13 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and 41 community colleges.
