Allegany College of Maryland President Cynthia Bambara Announces Retirement

CUMBERLAND, Md. (Feb. 26, 2024)–Allegany College of Maryland President Dr. Cynthia S. Bambara announced her intent to retire from the College to the ACM Board of Trustees, effective January 1, 2025.

For over 40 years, Bambara has dedicated her career to higher education students and local communities in various support and administrative roles. Bambara has served as president of Allegany College of Maryland for the past 13 years.

According to Bambara, “I have had the opportunity to work alongside talented faculty, staff, and administrators who are deeply committed to our students and the mission of our institution. Together, we have achieved numerous milestones, expanded academic programs, strengthened community partnerships, and enhanced student support services.” 

Additional announcements regarding the search process for the next college president will be made in the months ahead and coordinated by the College's Board of Trustees a seven-member board that oversees ACM’s academic, administrative, and financial operations.

According to Kim Leonard, chair of the Board of Trustees, “Allegany College of Maryland is very special, and we want to keep it that way. With our dedicated faculty, staff, and community of friends, I know that we will continue to meet the needs of our students and community through this time of change.”

He added, “We feel fortunate to have had the leadership from Dr. Bambara. Our community owes her a great deal of gratitude for her leadership in making Allegany College of Maryland the quality institution that it is today. Over the next year, we will have ample time to thank her.”

During her tenure at Allegany College of Maryland, Bambara served as a Middle States Commission on Higher Education Peer Evaluator and Team Chair, a Community Colleges of Appalachia Board Member, and a Maryland Association of Community Colleges Past Chair and former Executive Committee Member. She is a 2012 graduate of Leadership Allegany and is involved with a variety of community organizations.
