CUMBERLAND, Md. – December 3, 2024 – The Community College Humanities Association (CCHA) again awarded honors to Allegany College of Maryland’s Expressions student literary magazine through its national literary magazine competition. The 2024 edition of Expressions won third place for Best Magazine in the Eastern Division and three ACM students, Mattesyn Crotts, Jonathan Schmoyer, and Drake Rose, received Eastern Division individual awards.

In the category of Best Creative Nonfiction, Crotts’ “Nala Peace” won second place and Schmoyer’s “The Musician’s Cognitions” won third place. Rose won third place in the Best Photography category for “Earth’s Kneecap.”

ACM has taken part in the Community College Humanities Association’s annual national literary magazine competition for nearly three decades. ACM competes in the Eastern Division, which includes Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Puerto Rico.

The 2024 edition includes 53 submissions by 25 Allegany College of Maryland students, some of whom graduated earlier this year, and a special fold-out page commemorating the publication’s 35-year history. Jonathan Schmoyer served as the edition’s student editor, with help from Associate Professor Tino Wilfong (faculty editor) and Associate Professor Heather Greise (assistant editor for poetry). The front and back covers were designed by an ACM student intern, Jocelyn Crabtree. Matthew Fetters’ “A Sunny Day at the River” adorns the front cover, and Justice Warner’s “Cumberland Overlook” graces the back cover.

Printed copies of the 2024 edition can be found in the Thomas Welcome Center at ACM. Current and past editions of Expressions are available for viewing online at www.allegany.edu/expressions.
