Addictions Program

CUMBERLAND, Md. (July 9, 2019) – Allegany College of Maryland received approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission to add a one-year, 16-credit Addictions Services Certificate to its Human Service Associate coursework. The Addictions Services Certificate will enable regional helping professionals to have competencies in addiction treatment and service delivery in order to address the region’s expanding opioid crisis.

The six-course certificate provides students with knowledge that is essential for the field of addictions. When combined with other requirements of the Maryland State Addictions Licensing Board, these courses will also meet the required addictions-specific courses for the Maryland Addictions Counselor Certification.

The Certificate in Addiction Services is intended primarily for students enrolled in ACM’s Human Service Associate degree program or another Maryland State-approved addictions preparation degree. Students interested in a career in addictions counseling should refer to the Human Service Associate Degree program for a curriculum description or consult with the Advising Center for other options.

Certificate courses are open to anyone who would like to enhance their resume or career portfolio or to individuals with an interest in addictions. Certificate courses alone will not enable an individual to sit for the associate level Maryland State Addictions Counselor Certification Exam.

Interested students are encouraged to enroll now for the upcoming fall semester.

Demand for substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors is projected to grow 23 percent from 2016 to 2026, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
