ALUMNI ASKED TO SHARE RECOLLECTIONS OF PRESIDENTS ZIMMER AND HAINES FOR MAGAZINE

CUMBERLAND, Md. (Nov. 24, 2021) – Allegany Community College/Allegany College of Maryland alumni are asked to share their memories of two presidents who shepherded the college’s growth for nearly two decades: Dr. Robert S. Zimmer and Dr. W. Ardell Haines. Their recollections may be shared in the spring edition of the college’s ACCESS ACM magazine for alumni, donors and community supporters.

Alumni may email, message the college through its Facebook page, or mail typed submission to the Advancement and Community Relations Department, Allegany College of Maryland, 12401 Willowbrook Rd SE, Cumberland, MD 21502. Individuals are asked to include their hometown and graduation year or years of attendance.

Zimmer was given one month to open Allegany Community College in 1961 at the request of the Allegany County Board of Education. Within four years, the college that initially opened with only six faculty members, 102 students and a limited number of transfer degree programs was an accredited institution with plans underway for a modern campus. Zimmer served as president from 1961 to 1967.

Haines, who served as college president from 1967 to 1980, oversaw the opening of the college’s 316-acre campus on former farmland on Willowbrook Road, additional buildings construction, and the incredible expansion of degree, continuing education and workforce development programs.
