ALLEGANY COLLEGE OF MARYLAND HOSTS SPRING ADULT BASIC EDUCATION INFORMATION SESSIONS

CUMBERLAND, Md. (Feb. 24, 2021) – Allegany College of Maryland’s Adult Basic Education program will host virtual information and orientation sessions at 1 p.m. on March 3, March 31, and May 5, 2021. The sessions will be hosted via Zoom.

The Adult Basic Education program is a grant-funded program that provides educational services to Maryland residents. The college offers courses at no-cost or with minimal fees for testing or materials, including Adult Basic Education (ABE), Diploma Prep, Family Literacy, English as a Second Language, Workplace and Career Readiness Skills, and ABE Program Support.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes develop the reading, writing, and math abilities for individuals to perform day-to-day tasks and build skills necessary for securing a non-traditional high school diploma and employment. The popular Diploma Prep course prepares students to take the official General Education Development GED Test or qualify for admission to the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). A Family Literacy course provides parents real-world reading, writing, math, and technology skills along with career exploration opportunities. ABE Program Support instruction helps eligible students transition to college by developing career and education goals, post-secondary skills and strategies for learning, and content knowledge. An  English as a Second Language (ESL) course helps English language learners gain the basics of reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. A Workplace and Career Readiness Skills course uses an ACT Workforce Solutions curriculum to improve students’ employability and basic skills.

Support services are available for students in need. To register for a Zoom session, please call 301-784-5448 or email Melanie Valentine, an ACM intake assessment specialist, at mvalentine6162@allegany.edu
