CUMBERLAND, Md. (June 18, 2019) – Allegany College of Maryland will offer a phlebotomy/laboratory assistant certificate program through its Medical Laboratory Technology Department. Prospective students are invited to enroll now for the upcoming fall semester.

ACM’s phlebotomy/laboratory assistant certificate program is a one-year, 31 credit hours program that provides students with a well-rounded understanding of the laboratory’s role in patient care and prepares them for real-world healthcare settings. In addition to gaining in-demand phlebotomy skills, students will learn basic medical coding, basic laboratory procedures, essential healthcare professional skills, health record-keeping and medical terminology skills. The program requires 100 hours of clinical training and 100 successful draws.

Upon completion of coursework, students will be prepared and eligible to take the national certification test offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology and receive their Phlebotomy Technician certification (PBT/ASCP). The new program will be seeking approval from the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science.

Phlebotomy/lab assistants work in tandem with lab technicians in a variety of health care settings, including clinics, hospitals/medical centers, physicians’ offices or urgent care centers.

The ACM Phlebotomy/Laboratory Assistant certificate program is designated as a Health Manpower Shortage Program by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). Maryland residents from counties other than Allegany County who register in this eligible program will be charged the out-of-county tuition rate. However, these students may be eligible to receive reimbursement for a portion of the cost difference between the in-county and out-of-county tuition rates.
