ACM Outlook: Plans for Fall '20

ACMStrong Logo

ACM’s Fall 2020 semester is your chance to thrive in a safe, small college environment. It’s an opportunity to learn from dedicated instructors, make meaningful connections with fellow students, and move one step closer to achieving your goals.

This year has taught us a lot about perseverance, collaboration, humanity, and humility. We can’t wait to welcome you to class – whether your classes meet in-person, online, or a mix of both – and help you succeed.

“As a small college, we’ve adapted quickly to the challenges of the past semester, and we’re moving forward with new technologies that enhance in-person and remote learning, and deepen the connections that we have with our students and, perhaps more importantly, the connections they have with one another.” - President Dr. Cynthia S. Bambara

Enhanced Health & Safety Measures

We’re taking extensive precautions to keep you (and us) #ACMstrong.

We require all students, campus visitors, and employees to wear face masks or face coverings, practice proper hand hygiene and social distancing measures, and self-monitor for coronavirus/COVID-19 disease symptoms. Everyone is required to sign in when visiting an office or department, and attending class or a lab.

Hand sanitizer is available in all buildings. ACM campuses and education sites undergo intensive cleaning and sanitation daily. This includes the use of special cleaning chemicals and an ultraviolet (UV) sanitation cart for high touch areas like computer labs.  Disinfectant wipes will be provided to individual students as they enter their classroom.

We’ve changed the way we’re offering classes to reduce the number of students in each class. This act of reducing classroom density may help you build stronger relationships with your classmates and instructors in the process.

Options for Fall Learning

Fall semester courses begin on Monday, August 24, and delayed start courses begin on Tuesday, September 15. There are no plans at this time to shorten the semester.

We’ve developed six different ways to learn for the Fall ‘20 semester. Your class schedule may be a mix of these different methods.

  • F2F or Face-to-Face Instruction
You’ll be in an ACM classroom with a limited number of students. Primarily offered for small enrollment classes, labs, and clinicals. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided to students working in close proximity.

Face to Face Traditional

  • F2FA or Face-to-Face Instruction with Alternating Schedule
Your class will be divided into two groups. You’ll be in an ACM classroom with your group for one class period while the other group watches the course livestreamed. The next time the class meets, the rotation flips. Your group will watch the course livestreamed while the other group attends class.

Face to Face Alternating

  • Online Instruction
You’ll take your class online from your residence. You may be required to take exams in-person, depending on your instructor.

Online Instruction

  • Blended or Hybrid Instruction
You’ll be in an ACM classroom 30-79% of the time and participate in online instruction or coursework activities the rest of the time.

Blended

  • Flex Instruction
You choose whether you want to learn through face-to-face instruction in an ACM classroom, by watching a livestream of your class in session, or viewing a recording of your class at a time convenient to you.

Flex Instruction

  • Distance Learning or Telecourses
You’ll be in a distance learning classroom at one of our two campuses or Gateway Center for instruction. The course instructor will teach face-to-face from one location with video connection at the other locations.

Distance Learning and Telecourses

Meetings & Appointments

You’re welcome on campus during business hours (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday) to meet with faculty and staff. To reduce the number of individuals present at any given time, we offer phone and virtual appointments through popular platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and GoToMeeting.

We strongly recommend, but do not require, appointments. To set up in-person appointments, you can search our college directory or visit department pages.

Willowbrook Woods

ACM’s on-campus student housing, Willowbrook Woods, will reopen prior to the fall semester with modified housing density. Majority of apartments will house two students instead of four, which will provide each student their own bedroom and bathroom. Applications for the Fall '20 Semester are no longer being accepted.

New Student Orientation

New students are encouraged to participate in a student orientation session. Sessions will be held virtually for the Fall ’20 semester. New students should monitor their ACM student email account for information about Orientation.

Cafeteria

Metz Café will resume food service on the Cumberland Campus on Monday, August 24, 2020. Metz will comply with State of Maryland and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mandates for food service including social distancing, occupancy levels, face coverings, and other mitigation protocols. Cafe hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.  Items for sale will be pre-made and prepared for grab-n-go.  Rotating daily specials will be offered.

Athletics

The ACM Athletics Department is following guidelines provided by the NJCAA and MDJUCO.  An announcement was made on July 13, 2020, by the NJCAA Presidential Advisory Council and the NJCAA Board of Regents regarding an adjusted action plan for the 2020-21 academic year. Additionally, Tommie Reams, ACM Athletic Director, announced on August 3rd the decision to cancel all fall sports until Fall 2021.

Campus Store

Books for the Fall ’20 semester will be available for sale beginning August 1st. Students may place book orders online 24/7. Orders may be shipped directly to students’ homes or picked up at the Cumberland or Bedford County Campus.  A Pick-Up Window has been installed at the Cumberland Campus to allow for social distancing and quick receiving of items.  Students may also visit the Campus Store during walk-in hours. Pick-Up Window and Walk-In hours  can be found here

Virtual Learning Space

Class scheduling may not always allow students the feasibility to connect from their home to participate in a virtual course.  ACM established Zoom Rooms in the Zimmer Theatre in College Center (59 max occupancy) and the Thomas Welcome Center lounge (13 max occupancy) for students who need a space to virtually learn on campus. Students attending the Bedford County Campus in need of a place to virtually learn, may stop by the Student Services Office for assistance.

Students must practice physical distancing when taking advantage of these spaces.  Students must provide their own device, plug-in with earbuds, and wear a face covering for the duration of class.

Gateway Center Transportation

Shuttle service for students to and from the Cumberland Campus to the Gateway Center/School of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts in downtown Cumberland will resume at the start of the fall semester.

Continuing Education and Workforce Development

The Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development will release its fall course catalog in September. Questions about course offerings may be directed to the Office of CE Registration at 301-784-5341.
