Letter from the Vice-President of Continuing Education

Jeff T. KirkThe new year comes with new courses and new opportunities for 2013!

We would like to thank our returning students, and welcome those who are coming to us for the first time. The Center for Continuing Education & Workforce Development at Allegany College of Maryland strives to meet the educational needs of the Tri-state area with our diverse offerings. Whether you find yourself here for personal enrichment, or looking to master skills to advance in the workplace, we are here to help you reach your goals.

Our staff and instructors began earnestly preparing this winter/spring schedule the day after the fall catalog was released. Their efforts are reflected in the new courses offerings found within including: Beginners Woodcarving; The Art of Interviewing and Public Speaking; Hula Hoop Your Way to Health; Small Engine Maintenance; eBay: Your Online Yard Sale; and Facebook for Seniors.

In addition to new courses, we have added to our program team as well. Shane Riggs has joined us as Coordinator of Community Services. Shane Riggs is the author of the Song of the Red Sparrow novel series, available internationally in bookstores and through online vendors. He has also penned four plays, three of which debuted at ACM and all of which have been staged multiple times by varying theatrical organizations across the country. The founding and former managing editor of Allegany Magazine, Shane also works as an adjunct instructor of developmental English here at Allegany College of Maryland.

Maryland seniors please take note! In our attempt to make this catalog more user friendly, we have identified a Maryland Senior Course Cost on those courses which any Maryland senior over the age of 60 may take advantage of at the designated price. Learning should not be limited by your age or your schedule. This is why we offer evening and weekend courses, as well as online. We have classes geared for young children through seniors, and every age in between. Come for a few hours or stay for an entire year! And if you have an idea you don’t see in our catalog, please ask. Many courses have been suggestions from students like you.

Please consider making us your destination for affordable lifelong learning! We would like to extend best wishes to Dr. Barbara R. Beebe, former Vice President of Continuing Education, on her appointment as the sixth President of Western Texas College.
