Since it's beginning in 1973, ACM's Human Service Program has used a Learning Community model of education.
What does a "LEARNING COMMUNITY" involve?
-
joining with a small group of students who enter the program together
-
taking all classes in the four clinical phase semesters with this group of students
-
developing close relationships with classmates and the two Human Service faculty members
-
creating a safe and supportive environment for growth and learning
-
learning not only from practicum experiences, texts, and the instructors, but also from each other
-
becoming part of a "family" that has a history and a future together, even after graduation
Together We...
- have learned to dream, and to live those dreams...
- have helped each other grow and learned to awaken a deeper sense of ourselves...
- took risks, made mistakes, laughed, cried, opened ourselves up, and carried one another...
- made everlasting friendships...
- explored how to accept differences, and grew to love and appreciate each other...
- made it through the hard times...
- broadened our own as well as other's perspectives...
- were able to show our best and worst sides...
- grew and found who we REALLY are...
- discovered how to see our world through new paradigms...
- made a difference in the lives of others...
- went from strangers to acquaintances, friends to family...
- accomplished a common mission.
