Intro to Geocaching (C/S207)

Seek and ye shall find. As long as you have a Global Positing Satellite device. Geocaching is all the rage as an outdoor recreational activity and in this new class, students will use a GPS and online clues to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches." The class will at first focus on how to learn the sport of geocaching, and how to best utilize websites and electronic devices to hunt for geocaches. After the initial classroom work, students will then take what they have learned into the "field" and be geocache detectives, hunting down hidden treasures alongside an experienced instructor. Geocaches are currently placed in more than 200 countries around the world and on all seven continents, and even aboard the International Space Station. And there are hundreds hidden all over Western Maryland. Learn how best to find them, get tips on how to find them first, and open your eyes to a new hidden world in your own backyard. Materials needed: A GPS unit is recommended for the course but not required. Students should have comfortable walking shoes for two of the five classes.
