Oscar Winning Movies (C/S218)

Spring time is Oscar time! What makes a movie Oscar-worthy? Why did Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy earn multiple Oscars, while Fred Astaire and Judy Garland never won? How does the Academy choose its winners, especially in a year packed with Oscar possibles? In this class, we'll watch some of the greatest Oscar winners of the past 80 years -- from the very earliest days of the Academy to today -- and see what made them classics. Some will feature Oscar winning performances by names like Tracy, Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor or Barbra Streisand, and some will be winners for Best Picture, like 1927's "Wings," 1947's "Gentleman's Agreement," or 1959's "Ben Hur." If you want to see the creme of the crop in American cinema, this class is the one for you! Includes one admission to "It Happened One Night", a cinematic experience, on February 22.
