Evaluation and Treatment of Incontinence (CHE743)This class is open only to specifically identified professions. Verification of professional certification or licensure may be required. It is the responsibility of the participant to ascertain whether a course is within the scope of practice of their profession as determined by their regulatory body.
Incontinence is experienced by millions of Americans and is a leading cause of nursing home placement. Over 80% of incontinent patients can reduce or resolve their symptoms with therapeutic exercise and education in lifestyle changes. As the health care providers with the greatest knowledge of musculoskeletal function, rehab professionals are the ideal providers of continence care and instruction. This one-day course for physical therapists, occupational therapists and assistant is designed to provide therapists with the skills needed to evaluate and treat patients with stress and urge incontinence. We will utilize an external approach that is easily learned and can be applied in all clinical settings. Pelvic floor muscle palpation and designing home programs will be taught in hands-on labs. For health care professionals who choose to advance to internal pelvic floor therapy, this course is an excellent first step. This approach does not use EMG, internal probes or internal palpation of the pelvic floor muscles. It is based on research that shows that exercises alone are as effective as more complicated and invasive treatment. This treatment approach is covered by Medicare and most other insurers. Approved by MD OT & PT Boards for 6 hours. For information, call 301-784-5526.
