Allegany County Tour Guide/Receptive Training (PRO956)

There is an immediate need for tour guides and receptives (a tour operator or guide who specializes in incoming visitors) in this area. ACM/CE is pleased to partner with Allegany County Tourism to offer this apprentice-style program designed to prepare you to step into the growing local tourism industry, right here in Allegany County. This hands-on program led by top local receptives/guides Ansel Shercliff and Ellen McDaniel-Weissler, will allow you to acquire the requisite knowledge of area history, as well as the tour planning and implementation side of the business. It is recommended for those new to the field as well as those currently in the tourism and event planning industry. Students will work with the instructors to plan and execute tours, shadow the instructors to acquire tour knowledge and guide techniques, study area history with presentations by local historians, and gain an understanding of the risks and rewards of working in this industry or owning your own tour business. Students are asked to attend the following local tours as a part of this curriculum - April 27th, 9:30AM-3:00PM and June 22nd, 9:30AM-7:30PM. Before completing the course, you will have an opportunity to act as a receptive and guide on an actual local tour. The date and time of the student led tour is to be determined based on student, instructor and bus company availability.
