Therapeutic Exercise and Intervention for Osteoporosis (CHE 729)
More than half of all people over the age of 50 are at risk for bone density problems including osteoporosis and osteopenia. The prevalence of osteoporosis in our society is expected to increase dramatically as the baby boomers reach older adulthood. In addition to post-menopausal osteoporosis, many individuals develop this condition as a result of steroid use, dietary deficiencies and other health problems or from a period of limited weight bearing. Therapists are in a unique position, not only to treat the effects of osteoporosis, but also to teach prevention strategies. No matter your work setting, this evidence-based course helps participants implement the best practice patterns for clients with osteoporosis and those at risk for developing it. Participants will examine pharmacological interventions and nutritional strategies as well as demonstrate therapeutic exercises and ADL/IADL adaptations that strengthen and protect the spine. You will learn to recognize the risk factors and early warning signs for osteoporosis, employ osteoporotic precautions in your treatment and refer clients for appropriate evaluation. You will be able to establish functional goals and safely progress therapy for each client, focusing on reducing fall and injury risk. Attendees from a variety of rehabilitation and health care settings will gain strategies for immediate implementation to benefit this population. Approved by the Maryland PT Board for .6 CEU's and by the Maryland OT Board for 6 contact hours. Pennsylvania and West Virginia Boards accept our hours. Professionals only.
