In Search of Churchill: The Life and Times of Sir Winston Spencer Churchill, the Greatest Leader of the 20th Century (C/S170)

“History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.”- Sir Winston Spencer Churchill In this course, students will study the multi-faceted 90 year life of Churchill including all of his accomplishments as well as his failures. Considered by many to be a genius, Churchill is primarily recognized as the politician and statesman that led the British to victory in WWII, but he is a vastly more complicated man with many interests and achievements. He was a soldier, politician, statesman, military innovator, orator, writer, sportsman, painter, builder, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, doting father, world traveler and devoted husband. Students will examine his written works, a plethora of biographies written by his admirers and detractors, movies about his life and adventures, excerpts of his speeches and the wide variety of Churchill related memorabilia. A detailed outline of the course and a bibliography denoting suggested reading will be provided.
