Frontier Heroes in American Culture (C/S197)

This new course, taught by instructor Ellen McDaniel Weissler, is a companion to the "Heroes of the Frontier" class. In this class, we will study how American culture has portrayed the frontier and its people, through books like "The Last of the Mohicans" and "My Antonia"; TV shows like "Bonanza," "Daniel Boone," "Gunsmoke" and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman;" movies starring John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Clint Eastwood and Mel Brooks; and plays such as "Oklahoma!" We'll discuss the evolving role of the Native American in our frontier history, from misunderstood villain to respected cultural icon. We'll look at the glorification of the cowboy image in popular culture.
