Ladew Topiary Gardens (C/S004)
Come aboard the Culture Coach for the ultimate home and garden tour as we travel to the lush Ladew Topiary Gardens and lavish Ladew manor in beautiful Monkton, Maryland. Named one of the top five gardens of its kind in 2012, the extraordinary topiary gardens were designed and developed by Harvey S. Ladew (1887-1976) and are known throughout the world. The 22 acres of delightful gardens include more than 100 larger-than-life topiary forms which serve as backbone and centerpiece to a series of garden rooms with names such as the Rose Garden, White Garden, Yellow Garden, Garden of Eden, Sculpture Garden and Iris Garden. The life sized Hunt Scene of topiary horses, riders, hounds and a fox is one of the most famous of Ladew’s creations. Both the house and gardens are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors will not only stroll the gardens but also tour the famous house and be able to take in the gift shop and historical displays. A box lunch catered by the Ladew estate staff is also included. On the way back to Cumberland, the Culture Coach will make a two hour “layover” stop in Frederick where passengers can stroll downtown Frederick at their own pace, taking in the shops, cafes and artistic murals.
