Creative Counseling Techniques (HSP 524)

Counselors often need to get away from the standard talk-listen counseling approach in order to engage the client. Many counselors rely heavily on reflection and clarification and do not use a multisensory approach in their counseling. The brain likes novelty and remembers more when concepts are experienced and seen. The latest brain research suggests, the more parts of the brain that are stimulated the more likely the lasting impact. The use of creative techniques helps the client to better visualize their problems and see the problems in concrete ways. Metaphors experienced through the use of props, chairs, and drawings enhance counseling. This workshop will offer a variety of simple, yet effective creative techniques that can be used with almost any theoretical approach. The use of the innovative, novel techniques adds interest to the session for both the client and the counselor. Most of this workshop will be in the form of brief demonstrations of creative techniques. Creative use of different chairs will be discussed and demonstrated. Emphasis will be on encouraging participants to be willing to have the client change seats or to go to the whiteboard. The workshop will show how creative techniques can help with clients who are in either the pre-contemplation or contemplation stages of change. Also creative techniques will be shown for working with resistant and difficult clients. Many unique techniques, lists, charts, drawings and diagrams will be presented. Techniques will be tied to a number of popular counseling theories. Open to professionals in the Human Services field.
