Movie Musical History – ‘Holidays in Hollywood’ (C/S046)

In this class, students will explore Hollywood's use of the Christmas holiday theme in its movies.
Students will view such musical and non-musical films as "Miracle on 34th Street," "Holiday Inn," "White Christmas," "The Bishop's Wife," "Scrooge," "A Christmas Carol," "It's a Wonderful Life," "The Man I Love," and "Love Actually," and will learn their backstage stories, how the studios worked with the holiday season to take advantage of their holiday themes, and why these movies are still holiday favorites today. Students will learn the history and evolution of holiday movies illustrated by anecdotes, photos, and analysis of those particular movies. How the genre reflected the political, social, economic and moral climate set the historical context of each era will also be discussed. Students are welcome to bring a lunch to the Wednesday class! Senior tuition waiver applies to Maryland residents 60 or older.

If you are a Maryland resident 60 years or older, course tuition will be waived for eligible courses as noted in individual course description.

Movie Musical History – ‘Astaire, Kelly and Garland’ (C/S046) NEW
Astaire, Kelly and Garland -- these three giants of the movie musical, together and separately, made the most influential and memorable musicals in the history of American cinema. Their partnering and solo work set the bar for everything during their lives and after. In this class, students will view some of the movies they made separately and together ("The Pirate," "Easter Parade," "That's Entertainment," "Summer Stock," "The Gay Divorcee," "Anchors Aweigh," "Daddy Long Legs," and "A Star is Born,") and discuss what made these artists so captivating, how they affected the cinema in America and around the world, and how their work with each other changed the face of the American Movie Musical. Students will learn the history and evolution of the American Movie Musical illustrated by anecdotes, photos, and analysis of music and lyric styles that epitomized the unique genre of the American Movie Musical led by Astaire, Kelly and Garland. How the genre reflected the political, social, economic and moral climate and the historical context of each era will also be discussed. Students are welcome to bring a lunch!
