English Tudor Dynasty History – ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII’ (C/S038)
This course will examine the history of the Tudor Dynasty from the Wars of the Roses in the 1480s to the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. Along the way, students will study Henry VII’s claim to the throne and his victory over Richard III at Bosworth; the circumstances which brought Henry VIII to the throne; Henry VIII’s foreign policy; wars and marriages; break with Roman Catholicism and dissolution of the monasteries; and, the succession crisis. The course will examine the reigns of Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey and Mary Tudor; the succession and reign of Elizabeth I; the rivalry of Elizabeth and Mary Queen of Scots; and, the end of the Tudor monarchy. Students will view period garb, listen to period music, watch period dances and be exposed to period artwork and literature. No textbook is required, but handouts and a bibliography denoting suggested reading will be provided. Students are welcome to bring a lunch!
