Art Criticism: The Educated Eye (C/S090)
Have fun exploring different types of art throughout art history (portraits, landscapes, still life, etc.) through this Art Criticism class. Learn the four steps of art criticism (description, analysis, interpretation and evaluation) and apply each to different styles of art. Review exemplary art by master artists and discover the qualities inherent in your personal art preferences. Students will develop an art vocabulary to better describe what they see in artworks (description). The fundamental qualities of different types of art will be explored and the influence the artist's techniques and chosen medium have on the finished artwork (analysis). Students will examine the artwork in the context of both artist's career and the historical period in which it was created (interpretation). Lastly, artwork will be evaluated and discussed how it is viewed by others in the art world (evaluation). Participating in art criticism is a little like playing detective: you follow the visible and invisible clues to discover the meaning of the work. Power point images, reproductions of exemplary works and original sculptures and paintings will be reviewed. Enjoy a trip through the fascinating world of art and emerge with a better understanding of what you like and why you like it.
