ACM Cruise-In and Concert Event Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Classic Car Cruise-In

Allegany College of Maryland has hit the half-century mark and everyone's welcome to help it blow out 50 candles in a party featuring a classic car cruise-in and a free concert by The Fabulous Hubcaps.

The Saturday, Sept. 24, event invites the college's countless friends to step onto the Cumberland campus and step back in time for an afternoon celebrating ACM's proud history in the community, tri-state and region.

"The college is now celebrating a major milestone, a half-century of offering quality higher education," said ACM's president, Dr. Cynthia Bambara. "We can take great pride in all that's been accomplished. Please join us in this community event, celebrate with us and enjoy the day."

The college's 1961 start provides the theme for the big occasion. Classic cars - tail fins, drop-tops and white walls included - will set the stage of the celebration and a popular disc jockey will air the soundtrack.

Owners of classic, vintage and custom cars are encouraged to take part in this cruise-in, conducted by the Classy Chassis Car Club. Dash plaques will be presented to the first 100 classic cars entered, and vehicles may begin parking at 1 p.m.

The cruise-in will let anniversary guests stroll down memory lane and admire the metal of a bygone age from 2 to 4 p.m. Meanwhile, a DJ from JonnyRock and Sounds Fun Entertainment will rev up the party by spinning oldies from the period.

The afternoon kicks into high gear when The Fabulous Hubcaps take the stage at 4 p.m. for a community concert. The seven-member band has been performing for 37 years, and their high-caliber musicianship, high-energy performances and high production values are legendary.

An active touring schedule that takes them far afield of their suburban Maryland base has won the Hubcaps an avid and widely dispersed fan base and earned them a reputation as one of the nation‟s most sought-after oldies show bands.

Frequent wardrobe changes help the Hubcaps assume characters from rock  n' roll's doo-wop era and forward. There are likely to be Elvis sightings -- and of Patsy Cline and many more music celebrities - in a two-hour show that promises full-out, crowd-pleasing entertainment.

The Hubcaps will perform on a covered outdoor stage adjacent to the Physical Education Building (where the show will move in the event of inclement weather) and the outdoor basketball courts will provide a dance floor to do the hop and the doo-wah-diddy.

Vendors will be on hand to sell sandwiches (hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and pulled pork) and other food items. There will also be soft drinks and ice cream and other frozen treats.

Visitors are invited to bring picnic baskets and their own beverages, but they should bear in mind that ACM is an alcohol-free campus. They might also want to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating on the courts and surrounding playing fields.
