Our Mission Statement:
All Student Affairs offices at Allegany College of Maryland strive to promote the success of each student and take pride in offering personal attention. Come to Student and Legal Affairs if you need information or help with the following areas:
Campus Kids Child Care CenterFor the convenience of students and staff, Allegany College of Maryland offers childcare in a special facility located in room CC-12 of the College Center Building. Campus Kids is licensed through the Maryland Department of Human Resources, Office of Child Care Licensing and Regulation. A professional staff, assisted by College work-study aides, conducts a program of structured activities designed to nurture the physical and mental growth of children. Eligibility: Children three through six years of age and toilet-trained are eligible to use the Center. The licensed capacity of the Center is 20 children (at any one time), and registration priority is given to children of Allegany College of Maryland students. Hours of Operation: The Center is open on days that credit classes are in session. Hours of the Center are 7:50 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Fees: The fee for children of Allegany College of Maryland students (credit and non-credit) is $1.75 per hour, per child. The fee for children of Allegany College of Maryland employees is $2.25 per hour, per child, or $17.00 for a full, eight-hour day. For an application or further information, contact the Center at 301-784-5236.
Counseling Services / StudentAllegany College of Maryland offers comprehensive counseling for its students – free of charge. Our contracted provider, The Mental Health Center, maintains its office in nearby Frostburg but schedules sessions with ACM students on campus. All services provided by The Mental Health Center are completely confidential and provided by qualified, licensed mental health professionals. Allegany College of Maryland’s counseling services are three-tiered: Standard Service: Any eligible student is entitled to receive up to three (3) hours of counseling per semester for any mental health issue with which s/he needs assistance. The student is responsible for making counseling appointments. Urgent Service: When a student is in immediate distress and it is apparent the student’s (or other person’s) welfare would be hindered or endangered by following the standard service protocol, an authorized College official will contact The Mental Health Center, describe the circumstances, and facilitate communication between the student and The Mental Health Center. If, based on information obtained through this telephone “intake”, The Mental Health Center determines that an urgent counseling need exists, the CENTER will schedule a counseling session with the student within 72 hours (excluding holidays). Each student who receives an urgent session still qualifies for up to three (3) hours of standard counseling service. Crisis Service: When a student is in immediate distress and it is apparent the student’s (or other person’s) welfare would be hindered or endangered by following the standard service protocol, an authorized College official will contact The Mental Health Center, describe the circumstances, and facilitate communication between the student and The Mental Health Center. If, based on information obtained through this telephone “intake”, The Mental Health Center determines that a mental health crisis exists, The Mental Health Center will promptly dispatch a qualified mental health provider to campus for crisis intervention. The College official will stay with the student in a safe location until the provider arrives. Each student who receives a crisis session still qualifies for up to three (3) hours of standard counseling service. For further information, please contact: Joanna DuVall, 301-784-5206 or The Mental Health Center, 301-689-5034.
Student LifeOrientation: All incoming, first semester students are strongly encouraged to participate in an orientation program (sessions are offered at all three campuses). The purpose of orientation is to inform students about academic, social, and general College policy affecting their participation as students in the College. Discussion groups and social activities are planned as a vital part of the orientation program. Watch your mailbox, newspaper, and/or this website for dates and times. Student Activities: Students can take advantage of the College's diverse social, educational and recreational offerings to make the experience at Allegany College of Maryland an enjoyable one. Life outside the classroom is important, and you can develop valuable (and marketable!) skills by being involved. Several College committees require or welcome student representation, find out how you can contribute to the College’s operations. Students may also participate in the many clubs or organizations sponsored by the Student Council. Approximately 27 clubs are currently chartered on campus and receive funds from the student fee to help in their basic operation. New clubs and organizations can be formed as interest dictates among the student body. The list of current student clubs and organizations includes:

Student CouncilThe Student Council functions as the governing organization of the student body. It serves as a means of participation in College governance with the faculty, staff, and administration, and acts for the students. In addition to serving as liaison between the College administration and the student body, the Student Council allocates student activity funds, coordinates campus social activities, and approves new campus student organizations. The student activity program is developed according to student interest and available resources. The Student Council meets weekly and all students are welcome to attend. For more information, contact the Director of Student Life at 301-784-5205 or College Center Building CC-40. Diversity CenterAllegany College of Maryland educates students from all walks of life, and we appreciate the richness that differences in cultures, ideas, backgrounds, and dreams bring to our learning environment. “Diversity is ‘otherness’ or those human qualities that are different from our own, [are] outside the groups to which we belong, yet are present in other individuals or groups.” Thanks to the work of the Diversity Task Force, Allegany College of Maryland now has a Diversity Center located in the College Center Building (lower level). All students are urged to (1) use the Center for diversity-oriented activities, (2) befriend students who are different from you, and (3) join the Diversity Task Force as a student representative. For more information, please contact the Director of Student Life by stopping by CC-40 or by calling 301-784-5205. Student Advocacy DayStudent Advocacy Day is an annual event held in Annapolis sponsored by MACC and coordinated by Maryland State VPs and Deans of Student Services. It is typically held the 2nd Wednesday in February. The event has three goals: letting the Maryland General Assembly know which bills pending before the legislature matter most to community college students statewide, giving our students an opportunity to meet local representatives to deliver personal messages of how ACM benefits their lives and their community, and allowing students to learn first-hand how state governments operates. ACM sponsors the trip, provides transportation, and provides breakfast and lunch.
Student HousingOn-Campus Housing: Off-Campus Housing: The Office of the Vice President of Student and Legal Affairs maintains a list of off-campus housing options, which is mailed to prospective students upon request. For further information, contact Joanna DuVall, 301-784-5206. Student Photo Identification CardsIn some instances, students may be required to show a photo ID card to obtain services at the various campuses of the College. As a way to accommodate students by providing a photo ID for College services and as a means to obtain discounts as a student in the community, photo IDs are made available to all credit at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Students are required to provide proof of ID and a current semester class schedule in order to obtain an ID. The cards are good for as long as the student is attending Allegany College of Maryland (each fall a new academic year sticker is required). Cost of Student Photo ID Cards: Dates, times, and place to have a photo ID created are posted throughout campus prior to the start of each semester. For further information, contact Joanna DuVall in the Office of the Vice President of Student and Legal Affairs (CC-128) (301-784-5206). ResidencyWANT TO CHANGE YOUR RESIDENCY? Here are the general rules:

Student WellnessFirst Aid Kits: First Aid Kits are located throughout the College (each building of the main campus) for use by students, faculty, staff, and visitors if the need arises. Resources: Student and Legal Affairs maintains a list of medical resources in the community including urgent care clinics. (See list of important documents.) Emergencies: ACM faculty and staff will call 911 in a medical emergency; each student should have health insurance through an employee plan or by purchasing a plan at the Business Office. In the event of a public health emergency, ACM will defer to the Allegany County Health Department for directions, suggestions, restrictions, etc. Voter RegistrationAs one of the Constitutional Rights as a citizen of the United States of America, Allegany College of Maryland wants to help the process of registering to vote convenient for our students. To this end, persons can obtain a voter registration form from the credit Office of Admissions/Registration and the Continuing Education Office of Registration. Completed forms are then sent to the Office of the Vice President of Student and Legal Affairs and delivered to the Allegany County Board of Elections for processing. Reports
