Our Mission Statement:

Student and Legal Affairs relies upon the College’s Mission Statement as a reference point whenever we undertake new projects or make decisions on unfamiliar matters. The Mission of Student and Legal Affairs is to educate students on life issues outside the classroom, to cultivate a safe learning environment, and to assist students in becoming well-rounded, responsible adults.

All Student Affairs offices at Allegany College of Maryland strive to promote the success of each student and take pride in offering personal attention.

Come to Student and Legal Affairs if you need information or help with the following areas:

Campus Kids Child Care Center

For the convenience of students and staff, Allegany College of Maryland offers childcare in a special facility located in room CC-12 of the College Center Building. The Child Care Center is licensed through the Maryland Department of Human Resources, Office of Child Care Licensing and Regulation. A professional staff, assisted by College work-study aides, conducts a program of structured activities designed to nurture the physical and mental growth of children.

Eligibility: Children three through six years of age and toilet-trained are eligible to use the Center. The licensed capacity of the Center is 20 children (at any one time), and registration priority is given to children of Allegany College of Maryland students.

Hours of Operation: The Center is open only on days that credit classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters. Hours of the Center are 7:50 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Fees: The fee for children of Allegany College of Maryland students (credit and non-credit) is $1.75 per hour, per child. The fee for children of Allegany College of Maryland employees is $2.25 per hour, per child, or $17.00 for a full, eight-hour day.

For an application or further information, contact the Center at 301-784-5236.

Counseling Services / Student

Off-Campus/Crisis Counseling: In an effort to provide students with the services of a trained professional counselor when an immediate problem or “crisis” arises which has or may have an effect on a student’s academic performance, the College has entered into an agreement with The Mental Health Center.

Eligibility: Any student enrolled in credit coursework at Allegany College of Maryland.

Services Provided: Three (3) one-hour professional counseling sessions will be provided to eligible students per semester.

Cost: There is NO COST for the initial three (3) counseling sessions.

Diversity Center

Allegany College of Maryland educates students from all walks of life, and we appreciate the richness that differences in cultures, ideas, backgrounds, and dreams bring to our learning environment.

“Diversity is ‘otherness’ or those human qualities that are different from our own, [are] outside the groups to which we belong, yet are present in other individuals or groups.”

Thanks to the work of the Diversity Task Force, Allegany College of Maryland now has a Diversity Center located in Room 19 of the College Center Building (lower level). All students are urged to (1) use the Center for diversity-oriented activities, (2) befriend students who are different from you, and (3) join the Diversity Task Force as a student representative. For more information, please contact the Vice President of Student and Legal Affairs' Office by stopping by CC-128 or by calling 301-784-5206.

Student Activities

Orientation: All incoming, first semester students are strongly encouraged to participate in an orientation program (sessions are offered at all three campuses). The purpose of these orientations is to inform students about academic, social, and general College policy affecting their participation as students in the College. Discussion groups and social activities are planned as a vital part of the orientation program. A letter outlining the programs in detail is prepared and distributed at appropriate times in order to give adequate advance notice.

Additionally, a Learning Fair is held in the College Center for incoming freshmen. Various College departments, as well as some community organizations, will exhibit a display and be available to answer questions.

Student Activities: Students can take advantage of the College's diverse social, educational and recreational offerings to make the experience at Allegany College of Maryland an enjoyable one.

Students may also participate in the many clubs or organizations sponsored by the Student Council. Approximately 27 clubs are currently chartered on campus and receive funds from the student fee to help in their basic operation. Student Council

The Student Council functions as the governing organization of the student body.  It serves as a means of participation in College governance with the faculty, staff, and administration, and acts for the students.

In addition to serving as liaison between the College administration and the student body, the Student Council allocates student activity funds, coordinates campus social activities, and approves new campus student organizations.  The student activity program is developed according to student interest and available resources.

The Student Council meets weekly and all students are welcome to attend.

Student Advocacy Day

Student Advocacy Day is an annual event sponsored by MACC and coordinated by Maryland State VPs and Deans of Student Services. The event has three goals: letting the Maryland General Assembly know which bills pending before the legislature matter most to community college students statewide, giving our students an opportunity to meet local representatives to deliver personal messages of how ACM benefits their lives and their community, and allowing students to learn first-hand how state governments operates.

ACM students are welcome to attend the event, which is typically held the 2nd Wednesday in February, by registering in the Office of the Vice President of Student and Legal Affairs.

Student Photo Identification Cards

In some instances, students may be required to show a photo ID card to obtain services at the various campuses of the College. As a way to accommodate students by providing a photo ID for College services and as a means to obtain discounts as a student in the community, photo IDs are made available to all credit at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

Students are required to provide proof of ID and a current semester class schedule in order to obtain an ID. The cards are good for as long as the student is attending Allegany College of Maryland (each semester a new academic year sticker is required).

Cost of Student Photo ID Cards:
New card: FREE
1st replacement card: $10
2nd replacement card: $25
3rd replacement card: $50

Dates, times, and place to have a photo ID created are posted throughout campus prior to the start of each semester.

For further information, contact Joanna DuVall in the Office of the Vice President of Student and Legal Affairs (CC-128) (301-784-5206).

Residency

WANT TO CHANGE YOUR RESIDENCY?
Just living in Allegany County (or elsewhere in Maryland) isn’t enough!
Allegany College of Maryland MUST follow state regulations* and federal law.
*MARYLAND HIGHER EDUCATION COMMISSION

Here are the general rules:

  • If you are under 24 years old, you are presumed to be financially dependant on your parent(s) or legal guardian(s).
Therefore, your residency is where your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) live.
. . . . Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter if you have been self-supporting, have filed your own income taxes, have lived on your own and/or have no relationship with your parent(s) – if you are under 24 years old.
  • If you are under 24 years old but meet certain criteria, your residency is where you live.
    Criteria:
    you are married,
you have a child for whom you provide at least ½ his/her financial support,
    you are a veteran,
both of your parents are deceased,
you are/were a ward of the court.
  • If you are over 24 years old, your residency is where you live
. . . . Unless your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) claimed you on their income taxes OR your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) provided more than ½ of your financial support during the last 12 months, then your residency is their residency.
  • To prove your residency, you MUST have a Maryland driver’s license (or state ID card with your current address), plus a lease, rental receipts (with street address), or notarized statement from your landlord.
In unusual circumstances, we might accept two alternate forms of proof (such as vehicle registration, voter registration, utility bills, income tax return, etc.).
  • These forms of proof MUST show that you lived at your current address at least 90 days before the start of the semester.
  • You MAY NOT change residency just to get lower tuition. You must plan to stay at your current address – which must be the place you call “home”.
  • Willowbrook Woods MAY NOT be your permanent address.

If you think you qualify, pick up a petition in the Vice President of Student and Legal Affairs' Office, then make an appointment to meet with the Vice President. Be sure to bring your documentation!

Student Wellness

First Aid Kits: First Aid Kits are located throughout the College (each building of the main campus) for use by students, faculty, staff, and visitors if the need arises.

Governor’s Wellmobile: We are happy to announce that the Governor’s Wellmobile is available to provide students and staff at Allegany College of Maryland preventative health care. The hours of operation are Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The Wellmobile is parked near the Allied Health Building.

“The mission of the Governor’s Wellmobile is to promote health and prevent disease in Maryland, particularly among vulnerable populations by making preventative care, primary care and health education more accessible.”

Voter Registration

As one of the Constitutional Rights as a citizen of the United States of America, Allegany College of Maryland wants to help the process of registering to vote convenient for our students. To this end, persons can obtain a voter registration form from the credit Office of Admissions/Registration and the Continuing Education Office of Registration. Completed forms are then sent to the Office of the Vice President of Student and Legal Affairs and delivered to the Allegany County Board of Elections for processing.
