Tutoring
The Tutoring Program of the Student Success Center has the goal of helping
students become independent learners. Through a review of the course
materials, tutors help students to gain a better understanding while providing
methods to improve their study skills and academic confidence. Tutors
are not intended to take the place of instructors but to provide additional
support that students need to successfully complete their courses. A
variety of support services including one-on-one peer tutors, small group
review sessions (study labs), and professional AmeriCorps tutors are available
in most credit courses.
Top Ten Reasons to Get a Tutor
- Improve your self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Develop a better understanding of subject content.
- Improve your study skills.
- Learn how to mange your time and still have time for fun.
- Improve your communication skills.
- Learn how to manage stress.
- Improve your vocabulary.
- Understand and mange test anxiety.
- Improve your written communication skills.
- Learn how to study smarter, not harder; get better grades in less
time.
The program is internationally accredited by the College Reading and
Learning Association.
Peer Tutor
Most Peer Tutors are individuals who are currently enrolled as students
at ACM. They provide the following assistance to students enrolled
in credit course:
- A review of class materials.
- Assistance in improving study skills.
- Help in building confidence in academic abilities.
Students are encouraged to apply for a peer tutor early and to meet
with him/her regularly throughout the semester. If the requests for
tutors are greater than the supply of qualified individuals, students
may be placed on a waiting list.
How to Apply for a Peer Tutor
- Complete an Application. This may be accomplished by visiting
the SSC in H-58 or by applying on-line. Students
may also print the on-line application and return it to the SSC.
- Get Assigned a Tutor. The SSC makes every effort to identify
and to assign qualified tutors who are available at the times the student
has requested as quickly as possible. If a tutor is not available
at the time the student has requested, he/she may be asked to meet with
the tutor at other times when the student is not in class.
- Receive a Tutor Assignment. The student returns to the SSC and
checks the Tutor Assignment Board for a notice of an assignment. If
the student provided a cell phone number and the permission to send
a text message, he/she will receive an electronic notification. Students will also receive notification by email.
- Contact your Tutor. The SSC will provide information on contacting
the tutor. The student should contact tutor as quickly as possible and
schedule the first appointment.
- Meet throughout the Semester. We recommend that students meet
with your tutor two to three times a week all semester. The tutor
and student should meet even if the student believes he/she has an understanding
of the course material.
What are the Tutee’s Responsibilities?
- The student is responsible for contacting the peer tutor as soon as
possible after receiving the assignment.
- The student must be enrolled in and attending the class.
- The student is responsible to arrive at all sessions on time and prepared
and to attend all scheduled tutoring sessions or to notify the tutor
in advance. Three unexcused absences may result in termination
of services.
- All tutoring sessions must take place on a campus of Allegany College
of Maryland.
- Students may receive three hours of tutoring per subject each of the
15 weeks in a semester for a total of 45. Five hours per week is
offer during the summer session.
- The student is responsible for maintaining contact with the peer tutor
and for scheduling future sessions.
How to become a Peer or Study Lab Tutor
- Determine Eligibility. Tutors must have:
- An overall (cumulative) grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
- An A or B in the course(s) to be tutored. In the event that
the student has taken a more advanced course that requires a strong
understanding of lower-level courses, the grade in that course may
be used.
- Sponsorship of an ACM faculty member. A signature is required.
- Be in good standing in the community.
- Apply in the SSC. Complete an application verifying qualifications.
- Interview with an SSC staff member. The interviewer assesses
the tutors competency in the subject matter and communications skills
as well as beginning the training process.
Study Labs
Depending upon funding and available staff, the SSC offers several study
labs that are staffed by peer, professional, or AmeriCorps tutors. These
labs meet are a variety of times and locations. For the latest schedule,
visit the SSC in H-58 or click here. No
appointments, applications, or fees are required; walk-ins are welcome. Those
students visiting the labs may receive individual attention or may study
in a group.
AmeriCorps
Tutors
AmeriCorps is a national service organization comprised
of thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds. Its members operate
as a domestic Peace Corps with the ideal of “getting things done”
across America.
AmeriCorps members serve at Allegany College of Maryland in the mathematics
and science study labs. In addition to the labs, members serve as
individual tutors or Classroom Assistant (CA). During the first week
of classes, the CA introduces himself/herself to the class and explains
the benefits of participating in peer tutoring and of attending a study
lab. Throughout the semester, the CA may work with a small group
within the class.
The Allegany College of Maryland CA Program is a modified version of
the national model known as Supplemental Instruction (SI). The program
varies from the traditional SI model in that the CA becomes more involved
in the class and laboratory. The CA attends all classes and serves as
a role model, taking notes and demonstrating an interest in the instructor's
presentation. As requested by the instructor, the CA may become actively
involved in the learning process by providing small group or individual
instruction during class time. The Science CA also becomes involved in
the hands-on laboratory. After the instructor has introduced the lab,
the CA helps individual students with laboratory concepts and procedures.
Tutoring Club
The Tutoring Club is composed of a group of tutors who meet to discuss
the rewards challenges of tutoring and methods to promote and improve
the program. In addition to fund raising activities, the tutors visit
tutoring program at other colleges and universities, attend national and
state meetings, and host an annual Tutor Appreciation Banquet.
