English/Writing
On-Line Writing Labs
The Online Writing Lab at Purdue University provides a variety of beneficial options for students. The Purdue OWL supplies grammar lessons, handouts, and necessary guidelines for producing academic papers. Along with these helpful aspects, this web site offers a variety of useful links to other outside sources. To access Purdue OWL, go to (http://owl.english.purdue.edu).
The online writing lab at Capital Community College is a well-organized and thorough web site. This website provides examples of papers written in APA and MLA style and explains how to cite sources used for said papers. It also provides a variety of frequently asked questions and responses to these questions. This site even gives guidelines for conducting research. To access this helpful writing center, go to (http://webster.commnet.edu/apa/apa_index.htm).
English
http://www.grammarbook.com/
Grammarbook.com is packed with information about sentence parts, sentence construction and grammar rules. Quizzes and interactive tests are a key part of this site to help apply and reinforce what you have learned.
English as a Second Language Websites
Students, for whom English is a second language (ESL), often require additional assistance with English grammar and writing. This assistance is not always available. The Online Writing Center has incorporated links to helpful sites to further assist these students.
The Online Writing Lab at Purdue University (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/esl/eslstudent.html), a site frequently used by faculty at Allegany College of Maryland, provides a variety of handouts and exercises for ESL students. These handouts and exercises are specifically designed to help ESL students with writing and grammar and are particularly helpful in explaining the rules for proper usage. The handouts on prepositions and articles are strongly recommended for ESL students. To further aid the students, OWL provides printer-friendly versions of the handouts and exercises.
OWL provides further links to resources for ESL students. These links provides students with answers to general grammar questions, explanations of English and American idioms, and on-line courses for continued studies in English among others.
Rong-Chang (http://www.rong-chang.com), a web page specifically designed for ESL students, not only provides links to a host of grammar resources but also to sites designed to aid in listening and reading comprehension. Along with these useful sites, Rong-Chang has links to games, newspapers, magazines, and dictionaries. This web page also lists other popular ESL sites.
Encarta (http://dictionary.msn.com) is a useful site for ESL students because the dictionary allows students to not only look up the meaning and parts of speech of a given word, but it also allows students to hear the word pronounced.
Dave’s ESL Café (http://www.pacificnet.net/~sperling/eslcafe.html) is both a useful and fun website for ESL students. Students can ask Dave a question of English grammar, comment about a variety of topics, read other students’ comments on these topics, or chat online with ESL students across the country. The student forum not only allows students to practice writing skills, but also allows students to read and correct others’ writings. This site also provides students with information about teaching English as a second language.
