The Better Business Bureau website provides consumer information about businesses and charities. The U.S. Census Bureau web site provides access to data collected by the Bureau from a variety of polls and surveys. The available data includes population demographics, business trends, economic indicators, and other information about the people and economy of the United States. Up-to-date business news, as well as frequently updated data about individual corporations, is available from Hoover's Online. The online version of Sales and Marketing Management magazine includes access to articles and other resources available to subscribers only. Ask a library staff member for the library's SMM user name and password. The Service Corps of Retired Executives is a national, non-profit organization and resource partner with the U. S. Small Business Administration. In addition to the resources at the SCORE web site, members provide face-to-face and email counseling to aspiring entrepreneurs who are seeking advice. Information about starting, financing, or expanding a business is available at the web site maintained by the Small Business Administration. The SBA site also includes updates on legislation affecting small businesses. ThomasNet is an industrial search engine that identifies and locates products, services, and suppliers for potential business customers. It includes line-item product details and contact information. CareersThe Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook web site allows users to find information about specific careers and "occupational clusters" of related jobs. This site features future employment estimates and other career related statistics. for Education 201 The Gateway to Educational Materials is a joint project between the U.S. Department of Education and the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology. It is intended to provide educators with quick and easy access to thousands of educational resources. Designed to be used by teachers, Education World provides access to over 100,000 education links. Classroom subjects such as math and social sciences are featured, as well as categories such as lesson planning, special education, magnet schools, and education news. The Educator's Reference Desk provides access to Internet resources, an archive of lesson plans, and an abbreviated version of the ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) database, which allows users to search for education-related publications. The complete ERIC database allows users to search citations for books, journal articles, dissertations, audio-visual materials, and research reports in the field of education. The full text of some of these documents is included in the database. The Karolinska Institutet, a Swedish university of medicine, has constructed an online database of disease information designed for medical students and professionals. OnHealth is an online publication that provides health information to the public. GuidelinesThe National Guideline Clearinghouse, developed by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research in partnership with the American Medical Association and the American Association of Health Plans, was designed to promote quality health care by making available the latest clinical practice guidelines in an easy-to-access location. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency responsible for implementing various provisions of HIPAA, has some basic information about the act available online. The HIPAA web page of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene addresses both general information about the law and concerns specific to Maryland.
