Subject headings:
Not sure what terms to use or ways to search?
Browse first:
To browse health-related subject headings, go to the online library catalog and click on the browse searching box on the left margin, then type “medicine” (no quote marks needed ) or “health” into the search box and scroll down to “subjects” in the menu on the box to the right.
You will get a list of subject headings that you can browse to see the various subjects of books in our library. Pay attention to any notes e.g. “See also narrower term….” You can click on any of the headings and get a list of materials that are cataloged under that heading.
Search:
Or, you can search by keyword for specific topics, such as specific diseases (“arthritis”) or concepts (“geriatrics”) etc. Tip: Be careful using keywords…you can miss some important items by not using the appropriate terms or misspelling a name. Spend some time thinking of alternate keywords or spellings that might describe your topic. Also, be sure to use the Help feature for general searching instructions.

To find specific articles and other types of literature:

To find specific articles from magazines, newspapers and other publications, go to the library web site main page http://www.allegany.edu/library/ and click on the appropriate box for on-campus or off-campus access to Online Databases. Note: off-campus access requires that you use the Maryland Digital Library, which requires your name and the bar code number from a valid ACM library card. If you don't have a card, stop by your campus library and you will be issued one. Also, some databases may require passwords for off-campus use. Please ask a librarian for details.

Once you get to the menu of all of the databases available, you wil need to choose which ones are appropriate for your needs. For health-related topics the following are available:
CINAHL (Clinical Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), Alt HealthWatch, Health Source: Nursing and Academic Edition, Health Source: Consumer Edition, and Proquest Nursing Journals. For access to articles in general interest periodicals, you might also try Academic Search Premier. Academic Universe, is another database that offers medical research articles.

For off-campus access to several of these databases, click on the The Maryland Digital Library box, enter the necessary login information, then choose the database(s) you wish to search.

Important Tips:

Searching databases can be difficult; click on the Help buttons of each database if you have any questions. Also: be careful when using keywords. Misspelling or omitting an important keyword can limit your search. For example, do you want to also search for “osteoarthritis” as well as “arthritis”? What about "rheumatoid arthritis" or "rheumatism"? Always ask a librarian for assistance if you need help formulating your search.

If your search results indicate that the full-text of an article is not available in the database, you can request an Interlibrary Loan of the article by clicking on the”Interlibrary Loan Request” box on the Library’s main page: http://www.allegany.edu/library/ and completing the request form. A full-text copy of the article can be borrowed from another library for you. This may take some time (ranging from a day or two to several weeks) …so always allow plenty of time to gather your research materials!

Photos and Images:

Are you interested in searching for photos or images on a certain health topic? The Multimedia Archive is a source that might be of help to you. Click on the box on the Online Databases Web page. If it is the first time you are using this source, be sure to click on the Take a Guided Tour link to learn how to search it. Ask for assistance and a staff person will help you to locate other sources of images.

Newspapers:

If you are interested in finding newspaper articles about health topics, e.g., public health events or issues, etc., try searching the National Newspapers database. This includes the full text of major newspapers like the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun. Click on the box on the Online Databases Web page and use keywords to search. Use the Help information for searching instructions or ask for assistance.
