Telecourses

What is a telecourse?

Today's telecourse consists of four important parts: a series of video lessons (typically one hour of programming per week); a comprehensive study guide; an academic textbook; and an on-campus instructor. You will also have an opportunity to meet with your instructor each semester. You will stay in touch with your instructor through phone conferences, mail and may have the option of using computer conferencing.

Telecourses have the same academic content and student outcome requirements as regular college classes. The big difference in distance learning courses and traditional, on-campus classes is the manner in which instruction is given to you.

Traditional students: Receive their classes directly from a faculty instructor who is in the classroom with them.

Telecourse students: Work more independently by watching programs and reading printed material and are often highly motivated and self-disciplined.

Why take a telecourse?

Many students today find that they are unable to attend traditional classes, due to employment obligations, family commitments, commuting problems, or time constraints. Telecourses, as a distance-learning mode, provide our "nontraditional" students with needed alternatives, such as convenience and flexible scheduling. Telecourses are as effective as face-to-face instruction, but don't forget, the quality of your education stems from the amount of time and effort YOU put into the process. You will be most likely to succeed if you complete your assignments on time, attend your on-campus sessions when scheduled, and keep your expectations high!

Again, the Advantages:

• Study comfortably at home.
• Avoid time-consuming and costly drives to class.
• Add flexibility to your busy schedule.
• Use videotaped lessons for later and repetitive review.
• Instructors are available for you when you have questions or concerns.
Easy access to your on-campus instructor is an important part of the program. As a telecourse student, you will meet with your on-campus instructor for an orientation. You will also be able to stay in contact with your instructor through telephone conferences and letters. After you register for the course, the instructor will contact you to arrange the first orientation meeting prior to viewing the telecourse.

How do I view my telecourse?
You may view telecourses in the College Library, or check the videotapes/DVDs out and view them at home. There is no fee, but as with library books, there is a time limit.

Are Telecourses available to students in Pennsylvania?
Yes! Students registering at the Somerset County or the Bedford County Campus will receive tapes to view at home. Students should be able to complete all of the exams at those sites as well.
