Purpose:

A first course in the understanding of computer based networking systems. The fundamental concepts and terminology of Local Area Networks will be discussed. Topics covered include LAN topologies, hardware, protocols, and operating systems including UNIX, Novell Netware, and Microsoft Windows Server.

 

 

Prerequisite:

Computer Technology 219 (PC Operating Systems), 221 (Micro Apps I), or concurrent registration

 

Course objectives:

1.         Learn the basic concepts and terminology related to computer based networking.

 

2.         Learn the characteristics of different communications media and LAN topologies and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each.

 

3.                  Become familiar with the hardware and software components of networked systems.

 

4.                  Become familiar with the networking capabilities of the Novell, Microsoft, and UNIX operating systems.

 

 


 

**         Please be advised that the time allotted to lab during class time will NOT be sufficient for completing most assignments.  You should be prepared to spend extra time in lab becoming familiar with the concepts presented in this class. The standard to follow is for every hour spent in class a minimum of three hours out of class will usually be required.**

 

Attendance / Tardiness policy:

Attendance is required for all classes and roll will be taken.  If you miss a class you are still responsible for any material covered.  An attendance score will count as a test grade.  Five (5) points will be deducted for each class missed.  Points will also be deducted for leaving class early.  Tardiness will be treated as a missed class.  Attendance reflects attitude.

 

Academic dishonesty:

Refer to the AC Student Handbook for the definition of academic dishonesty, and know well the definition of plagiarism.  Any act of academic dishonesty will be dealt with in an appropriate way.

 

Class participation:

Learning comes through communication, and thus is a two way process.  Participation not only affects your grade, but also affects how much you get from this course.  Please feel free to ask questions and make comments relating to the material being covered.

            Final                (Will count as 1 test) Final average of 95 or higher will exempt you from the final.

 

Course grading structure:

            90-100            =          A

            80- 89             =          B

            70- 79             =          C

            60- 69             =          D

              <60               =          F

 

Extra credit:  Extra credit is not normally a part of this course.

 

Deadlines:

All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due.  If absent then assignment is due the next class meeting. Late assignments will not be accepted.  All assignments will be posted on Blackboard.

 

Make-ups:

Make-up of exams must be scheduled with the testing lab. 

 

Miscellaneous:

No food or drink permitted in the classroom.  All cell phones are to be turned off.  No instant messaging programs are to be running during class.
