Please note: Technical difficulties do occur during
a semester. However, technical difficulties do not excuse late or incomplete
assignments
Text: Living with Art by Mark Getlein: 7th Edition, McGraw/Hill
ISBN: 0-07285-9342.
Your primary resource is the textbook Living with Art: There is software that accompanies this text. Please use it for auxiliary learning. If you don't want to come to campus to pick up the book, you can either order it from the Allegany College of Maryland bookstore and ask them to mail it to you (301-784-5348, there is an additional fee for shipping) or order it online from www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com, www.efollet.com, or www.half.com. If ordering online, use the ISBN number indicated above to be sure you order the correct textbook. If you choose this route, please be sure when you order that the textbook is in stock in order to avoid delays. You may start reading the text as soon as you get it, as it has a lot of content.
SMART START - If you are ordering the text from an online source, be
sure to order it well in
advance of the start of classes. Falling behind at the beginning of
class makes the course much harder.
Course Objectives:
The Student will develop:
The Student will:
· Demonstrate knowledge of artists, art movements and styles as well as media used by the artist- {prehistoric to contemporary}.
· Develop an understanding of the visual elements of art through written critiques.
· Complete a variety of studio projects to develop a better understanding of the creative process and the media artists use.
·
Explore a variety of galleries via the internet.
· Develop critical thinking skills through visual analysis and making judgments about art (critiques), and problem-solving skills, (art production).
Course Content:
The content of this course is considerable. Art has been found wherever traces of
civilization have been discovered. In an art historical context, the text covers the
time period from prehistoric to contemporary. In order to simplify this process
to gain an understanding of the time periods and the artworks produced, an
Art Journal will be kept with notes, questions and answers.
Also covered is the remarkable ability of the creative spirit. Creative problem
solving is the heart of the creative process and aides in all learning endeavors. In
this course the student will explore the creative process and produce artworks as
well as learn about various media and techniques, and artists. The artworks will
be displayed in the Virtual Art Gallery.
The student will also be able to verbalize these explorations through discussion
groups and through written assignments. Other art areas to be explored are
content, criticism via critical analysis, art ethics, and aesthetics. Thoughts and
ideas are posted to the Discussion Board as well as the Art Journal and written
assignments are delivered to the Digital Drop Box .
Written Assignments include an Art Appreciation Paper, two Art Critiques from
which art galleries are to be visited in person, and an Artist research paper/ Artist
Presentation. Please see the course calendar for due dates.

STUDENT CONDUCT AND PLAGRIARISM
Refer to Student Handbook.
The college has a strict policy on
academic dishonesty. You are expected to
understand and abide by the policy as defined in the student handbook.
The ACM student handbook defines plagiarism (page 62) as:
a. “the submission, as your own work, of papers or parts of papers actually written by another;
b. including in your own work a passage written by another person without giving due credit; i.e., quoting or paraphrasing without proper citation of source.”
Academic Dishonesty also includes failure on your part to keep your current and past assignments out of the hands of other students who may misinterpret their origins. To receive credit for quantitative assignments, please show all calculations. It is also suggested that you keep a record and/or rough draft of written or other work until you have received your final grade.
For
additional information on plagiarism, and how to avoid it, go to http://www.indiana.edu/%7Ewts/wts/plagiarism.html . For information on plagiarism and writing
bibliographies and citations, go to www.allegany.edu/plagiarism/ .

v ASSIGNMENT DEADLINE
Due dates are posted in the course outline/calendar.
Please see the course calendar for a week-by-week list of what topics will
be covered in the course.
Welcome to the online version of Art Appreciation 101. This introductory page is intended to help you to get started. Since there will be no face-to-face class lecture, it is imperative that you are conscientious, motivated and self-disciplined. While the course is very flexible in terms of when you put in the time, you can expect to average about the same amount of time as a normal lecture course -- about three hours total a week per credit. This comes out to nine hours per week. Note also that the course is NOT self-paced. Assignments are due by specific dates. You may work ahead if you like, but you may not “work behind”.
A list of all assignments and their due dates is included in the course calendar. I will not remind you of when assignments are due. You are expected to refer to the calendar and to complete all assignments on time. If you have difficulty with the assignments or have any questions, please contact me and I will be happy to assist you.
You will have opportunities to interact with other students enrolled in the course. You are encouraged to communicate with other students in the course by email, by use of the discussion board or by phone. Interacting with other students in the course will enhance your learning experience. Near the end of the course, there will also be a group project to further your understanding of group dynamics.
.

Students are encouraged to communicate with each other using the discussion board feature of Blackboard. Just because you cannot physically be in the same room as your classmates doesn’t mean you can’t communicate with them! The discussion board is provided so that students can get to know each other and discuss topics that are related to the course content. It can be a valuable source of information and support. However, please note that all messages are “public”, i.e. available for everyone in the class to view. When posting messages on the discussion board please keep comments on a positive note and avoid “flaming” (verbally attacking someone else). Please provide feedback to other students in a kind and constructive manner.
