ACC dental students honored at ceremony

CUMBERLAND - Allegany Community College recently graduated 31 dental hygiene students. During the Dental hygiene capping ceremony, the students were presented pins and fullbanded caps symbolic of their profession. Achievement and recognition awards were presented to several students.

Erin Fisher of Hampstead and Madean Dibert of Imler, Pa., received the William T. Fridinger Award, which goes to the student or students who achieve the highest grade point average. This award was established by the Fridinger family in memory of the founder and first ACC director of dental programs.

Academic Achievement Award winners were recognized. Ms. Fisher achieved the highest average in periodontics. Christine Sarsfield of Somerset, Pa., was honored for the highest average in pharmacology. Craig Smith of Cumberland was acknowledged for oral pathology.

The Procter & Gamble Technical Skills Award, which recognizes the student who displays the highest laboratory grades was awarded to Ms. Fisher

Kristi Coddington of Oakland and Mr. Smith were presented the Outstanding Clinician Award. The Upper Potomac Dental Hygienists' Society honors the individual or individuals who possess the highest level of clinical skills and maintain an excellent rapport with her/his patients, peers and instructors.

Elizabeth Farrell of Winchester, Va., received the Hu­Friedy Golden Scaler Award. This award recognizes the student who exhibits the highest degree of proficiency in scaling.

Colleen Finn of Walkersville and Ms. Fisher were recognized for their table clinic, "Tetracycline Hydrochloride Periodontal Fiber," presented at the annual North East Regional Student Dental Hygiene Association Convention, held at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Mass.

Sigma Phi Alpha is the national honor society of the dental hygiene profession. Individuals are selected in recognition of their scholastic achievement and professional accomplishments in greater service to dental hygiene. Ms. Fisher and Mr. Smith, as well as Bobbi Jo Reid of Shanksville, Pa. were inducted during this ceremony.
