OFFICE TECHNOLOGIES (61) 101 Beginning Keyboarding - 3 semester hours Offered first and second semesters. Offered as demand warrants in summer session. Three hours of lecture, demonstration, and applications a week. Emphasis is placed on learning the keyboard using the touch system obtaining
accuracy and speed, and applying these skills to production work, such
as letters, tabulation, centering, and manuscript problems. 102 Document Processing - 3 semester hours Offered first and second semesters. Offered as demand warrants in summer session. Three hours lecture, demonstrations, and applications a week. The student develops the skills of speed and accuracy on both straight-copy and production work. Production is stressed through practice applications involving letter styles, envelopes, tabulation problems, memorandums, business forms, and manuscripts. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 101 or consent of instructor.
Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. The student will spend four hours each week at a working station in a hospital or a medical office in order to become acquainted with medical procedures. Classroom instruction includes the study of duties in the medical office including: patient relations; financial responsibilities; professional etiquette; communication; medical ethics; and development, analysis, and use of medical record systems. Prerequisite: Consent of program director.
Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This one-semester course in accounting is designed for non-transfer students.
Accounting/bookkeeping principles and procedures for a business operated
as a sole proprietorship are presented. Computer software will be used
to supplement the teaching of skills. 110 Medical Terminology 1 - 3 semester hours Offered first and second semesters. Three hours lecture a week. An analysis of medical terminology designed to give a clear understanding
of medical terms on the basis of roots, prefixes, suffixes, and derivatives.
Study of body systems is included. 112 Transcription Systems - 3 semester hours Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This course provides the students with entry-level skills in voice and handwriting recognition and traditional transcription. Document formatting, editing , and proofreading will be stressed. Various writing systems that are used in the office environment are discussed. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 101 115 Fundamentals of Medical Transcription - 3 semester hours Offered first and second semesters as demand warrants. Three hours of lecture a week. This is an introductory course covering the handling and processing of medical records and documents and the transcription of basic medical dictation. Productivity standards will be addressed as well as topics on trends and developments in transcription technology and their impact on medical transcription. Transcription of basic medical dictation, incorporating English usage and machine transcription skills, medical terminology, proofreading and editing skills, and meeting demand accuracy and productivity standards will be emphasized. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 102 and 110, concurrent enrollment, or consent of instructor.
Offered first semester and as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This course is designed to provide the students with an overview of the legal assistant profession. Different legal structures and procedures used in law offices will be discussed. Ethical principles pertinent to attorneys and legal assistants will be emphasized. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 120 or concurrent registration. 118 Introduction to Medical Coding - 3 semester hours Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This course will address diagnostic and procedural coding. The course
will broaden coding knowledge and enhance coding skills by covering a
variety of medical specialties and coding issues encountered in healthcare
providers' offices. 119 Information Management - 3 semester hours Offered first semester and as demand warrants. Emphasis is placed on information management through the use of e-mail, contact lists, calendars, task lists, journals and notes. Microsoft Office and Outlook will be used. Activities and discussions will also include personal digital information systems, internet and e-mail ethics/etiquette and other information management technology. Prerequisite: Computer Technology 101, or Office Technologies 101, or concorrunet enrollment or consent of instructor.
Offered first semester. Three hours lecture a week. This course is designed to provide knowledge and understanding of terms commonly used in the legal profession. Content of the course includes spelling and definitions of terms in the legal field.
Offered second semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. Examines stages of civil law suits, from pre-trial preliminaries through trial and post-trial procedures. Covers gathering information through client interviews; drafting of pleadings, motions, and other documents; discovery and disclosures; preparation of briefs and memoranda.
Offered second semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. Introduces the elements of tort law; negligence, duty of care, foresee
ability, proximate cause, breach, damages and recovery, specific torts,
and their defense. Examines pre-trial, trial, and appellate procedures. 126 Legal Research and Writing (Legal Nurse 126) - 3 semester hours Offered first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. Surveys basic legal research techniques; examines judicial decisions, statutes, administrative regulation, digests, encyclopedias and other publications. Emphasizes legal writing and terminology, including legal forms and document formatting.
Offered first and second semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture, demonstrations, and applications a week. This course will equip today's professional with hands-on experience in manipulating financial office software. QuickBooks Po and spreadsheet software will be used. Emphasis is placed on developing accurate data entry skills. The teaching of accounting concepts will not be included. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 101, Computer Technology 101.
Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours of lecture, demonstrations, and applications a week. Emphasis is on developing skills in data entry and manipulation of specialized medical software. Students will be given hands-on experience. Other instruction includes medical office bookkeeping/accounting, recordkeeping, scheduling, preparing specialized reports, and assuming other medical office responsibilities. Making decisions, setting priorities, and following written and oral instructions are also emphasized. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 101, 110 or Computer Technology 101, or consent of instructor.
Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This is an intermediate course in which the student acquires specialized training in the use of medical terminology, with emphasis on transcription of case histories, operative reports, letters, and physicians records. Study of medical vocabulary is emphasized. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 102, 110, or consent of instructor. 207 Medical Transcription ll - 3 semester hours Offered first semester and second semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture, demonstrations, and applications a week. This course is designed to offer the student further study and training in medical transcription using transcription through the use of authentic simulation of medical dictation. Students will perform transcription with the use of voice recognition software as well as standard keyboarding techniques. Proper use of medical vocabulary and transcription techniques will be assessed. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 206 or consent of instructor.
Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture and applications and four hours internship a week. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of human and technological skills necessary to succeed as an administrative assistant. Activities and discussions will include professionalism, effective communications, filing/database management, research, meeting/travel arrangements and global/workplace diversity. The course includes a four-hour a week internship in an office Prequisite: Office Technologies 119 and Computer Technology 101.
Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Offered as demand warrants in the summer session. Ten hours laboratory a week and one hour lecture. Students spend ten hours each week in a hospital or other medical office
receiving practical instruction and related experience in many phases
of medical secretarial work. Students will be assigned to offices where
experience will be gained under professional supervision. 213 Principles of Medical Insurance - 3 semester hours Offered first semester and second semester as demand warrants. A study of managed healthcare and major medical insurance programs is the emphasis of this course. Topics discussed include insurance terminology, electronic and manual completion and processing of insurance claims, medicolegal issues and billing and collection procedures. Medical terminology and diagnostic and procedural coding will be reviewed. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 118
Offered second semester or as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This course will examine the basic principles of real property law, including the creation of various estates and interests in land, shared ownership, easements, covenants, mortgages, and deeds of trust. Students will gain practice in the preparation of documents such as leases, sales contracts, settlement statements, deeds, notes, mortgages, and other documents. Students will also be exposed to the rudiments of title examination.
Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. The course will familiarize the student with advanced medical terminology related to clinical medicine, surgery, laboratory medicine, pharmacology, radiology, and pathology. Common diseases and conditions associated with the special terminology as well as the use of medical references and other resources for research and practice will be included. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 110.
Offered second semester and first semester as demand warrants. Three hours lecture, demonstrations, and applications a week. Emphasis of this course will be placed on transcription of medical dictation, using advanced proofreading and editing skills, while meeting progressively demanding accuracy and productivity standards. Medical dictation with foreign dialects and accents will be used to enhance listening skills. Students will perform transcription with the use of voice recognition software as well as standard keyboarding techniques. Standards in formatting and transcription as defined by the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists for certification will be reviewed. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 207
Offered first semester and as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This course is designed to enhance CPT and HCPCS Level II coding skills. Emphasis will be placed on assigning procedural codes and modifiers to case studies. Computerized coding will be introduced.
Offered second semester and as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This course is designed to enhance ICD-9-CM coding skills. Emphasis will be placed on assigning diagnostic codes to hospital and physician-based records. Students will be made aware of the differences in payment systems for hospitals and physician offices including the use of diagnostic related groupings (DRG). Computerized coding will be introduced.
Offered first semester or as demand warrants. Three hours lecture a week. This course is designed for the student who wishes to become familiar with the keyboarding and formatting of legal documents as well as reviewing legal terminology. Emphasis is placed on transcription techniques in the legal field. Prerequisite: Office Technologies 102, and 120
Offered second semester or as demand warrants. Three hours lecture and four hours internship a week. This course is designed to familiarize students with the various fields of law, the proper preparation of legal documents, and the law process. This course includes a four hour a week internship/practicum in a legal environment.
Offered as demand warrants. This course is organized on an individual basis for the student who wishes to pursue advanced study in office technology skills. The student will be supervised by an instructor and required to attain a pre-determined competency level. Approval by the Office Technologies' Program Director to pursue Independent Study Program is required. This course may be repeated for credit up to a maximum of 6 credits, based upon approval of the Office Technologies Director. |
