CERTIFICATION

Certification is available for careers in both medical transcription and medical coding.  The American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT) offers transcriptionists the opportunity to become Certified Medical Transcriptionists (CMT) by taking a two part national certification exam.  The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) gives medical coders the opportunity to apply for certification in two areas—hospital coding and physician office coding.  Coders who pass the national exam become Certified Coding Specialists (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist—Physician.  AHIMA also offers entry level certification through its Certified Coding Assistant (CCA) program.

Students who choose to specialize in transcription or coding through the use of restrictive electives are recommended to gain at least one year’s experience before applying for the certification exams.

For further information on these certification programs, visit AAMT’s website,  AHIMA’s certification website or AAPC’s website.
