Allegany College of Maryland's Medical Laboratory Technology Curriculum
was started in 1973. The program is primarily a two-year career program.
Traditionally, the program has trained graduates to work in patient care
laboratories. The program now has a number of options to diversify the
employment opportunities available to its graduates. The new options give
graduates opportunities outside of traditional clinical laboratories such
as biotechnology laboratories or environmental laboratories in which to
gain employment. The program includes both part-time and full-time students.
Traditional MLT Curriculum
A.A.S. Degree designed to prepare a graduate
to work in a clinical laboratory as a Medical Lab Technician/ Clinical
Lab Technician.
Fast-Track of the Traditional MLT Curriculum
Learn the clinical laboratory skills in 12 calendar months if you qualify.
Biotechnology A.A.S. Degree
Designed to prepare the graduate to work in a variety of
laboratory settings as a Science Technician. Courses in environmental
science and biotechnology are blended with the medical laboratory technology
courses to create a very flexible career option.
Biotechnology Certificate
This certificate program allows a previous
2 or 4 year college science graduate the chance to update laboratory skills
required in the biotechnology industry.
Blended MLT Traditional & Biotechnology
By blending a degree in clinical
lab science and biotechnology, the graduate greatly increases employment
opportunities to not only include a healthcare laboratory, but also to
include the rapidly growing Biotechnology research and industrial opportunities.
Histology Option
This is an additional clinical rotation completed upon graduation from
the MLT program. It allows the graduate an additional employment
opportunity by gaining skills necessary to work in the histology laboratory.
