Medical Laboratory Technology - Traditional Model

This curriculum primarily prepares its graduates to work in a clinical laboratory; however, the student receives many transferable science skills. This option allows the graduate to seek national certification as a clinical lab technician/medical lab technician. This option includes an internship in a clinical, hospital laboratory. Graduates of this option are employed in a variety of laboratory settings.

Graduates receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible for National Certification through the American Society Clinical Pathologists or National Certifying Agency (American Society of Clinical Laboratory Sciences).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

The traditional areas of medical laboratory training include:

Hematology
Clinical Chemistry
Parasitology/Virology/Mycology
Blood Coagulation
Microbiology
Blood Banking
Urinalysis/Body Fluids

Career Opportunities in Medical Laboratory Science:

The practice of modern medicine would be impossible without the tests performed in the clinical laboratory. It is estimated that 70-80% of all patient diagnosis is made on the basis of laboratory tests.

A medical team of pathologists, specialists, technologists, and technicians work together to determine the presence, extent, or absence of disease and provide data needed to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Laboratory procedures require an array of complex precision instruments and a variety of automated and electronic equipment. However, women and men interested in helping others are the foundation of a successful laboratory. They must be accurate, reliable, have an interest in science and be able to recognize their responsibility for human lives.

Go to the Occupational Outlook Handbook to learn more about Clinical Laboratory Careers. Employment opportunities in the clinical lab are very strong for Medical Laboratory Technicians
as well as General Science Technicians.
