Histology Rotation

This is an option in which the traditional Medical Laboratory Technology graduate can take an additional, summer rotation in the Histology section of the laboratory after graduation. The student will obtain practical experience in an 8-week clinical rotation. Gross specimen preparation, tissue preparation and embedding techniques, and tissue staining procedures studied.

Stacy Diehl, MLT(ASCP) works at the WMHS Histology Lab in Cumberland, MD "with an MLT degree there are so many options. The pathways are open for exciting career choices. I am using my MLT degree to work in the Histology (tissue processing) section of the laboratory."

The course is MLT 209 - Clinical Practice 111. It gives the MLT graduate the opportunity to work either in the clinical lab or the histology lab.

With an A.A.S. Degree in Clinical Lab Science and this extra rotation, the graduate would be employable as a Histologic Technician. After one year of employment, the A.A.S. Degree holder is eligible to become certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Demand is very strong for Histologic Technicians.
