Clinical Practicum and Internships

Traditional MLT Rotations

Allegany College of Maryland’s MLT Traditional option includes an internship in a clinical laboratory. The clinical option(traditional or fast-track) uses a number of practicum sites for the clinical internship.  The sites provide supervised, structured phlebotomy experience and rotations in clinical chemistry/urinalysis, hematology, immunohematology (blood banking/transfusion services), and microbiology/serology.

In the MLT traditional option, the rotations are Tuesday and Thursday during both the fall and spring semesters of the second year of the program. Each of the four major rotation areas are 7 weeks in length.

In the fast-track option, the rotations are M-F during the summer. Each rotation is 14 days.

Two phlebotomy days are included in the hematology rotation and one in the chemistry rotation.  Students spend over 500 clock hours in the clinical affiliate sites performing laboratory procedures.

Biotechnology Option Practicum

The biotechnology internship provides a way to broaden the preparation of the laboratory worker for environmental, epidemiological, industrial and research work environment.  The practicum is to be completed in the spring semester of the second year.  The practicum is ideally composed of three internships (2 biotechnology internships of 4-6 weeks each and 1 environmental internship of 2-3 weeks).  The internships are customized to best fit the student interest.  The internships should assist the student in choosing a specific career track.  Students should plan for the additional expense of living off campus near the affiliation site when the commuting distance is excessive. More internships are being developed.
