PHLEBOTOMY / EKG TECHNICIAN

Definition:
Phlebotomy and EKG technicians can work in a variety of health care facilities in the community, including hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices and nursing homes. National Certification for EKG & Phlebotomy areas is not required at present. Students wishing to obtain national certification and employment experience will need to complete additional hours for clinical.

Description:
The Phlebotomy Technician course is designed to provide instruction and classroom laboratory experience in routine phlebotomy practices to prepare competent individuals to work in hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics, and a variety of other blood collection facilities. The student will have classroom lab practice. Students who desire to participate in a hospital clinical can register through Continuing Education. Call 301-784-5503.

EKG Technicians perform 12 lead EKG's, place Holter Monitors, and identify basic cardiac arrhythmias. This course will include instruction on: cardiovascular anatomy and physiology; electrophysiology; terminology; pharmacology; electrocardiography (EKG testing) and basic interpretation; and Holter monitoring.


These classes are also available through Continuing Education for those people not wanting to complete the entire certificate program.
