Forestry Programs

A.A.S Forest Technology Degree. This is the cornerstone of forestry at Allegany College of Maryland.  This curriculum meets the standards of Recognition for Forest Technology Education by the Society of American Foresters (SAF).  This recognition is distinctive.  ACM has the only SAF Recognized Forest Technology Program in the State of Maryland and ACM is the only SAF Recognized program within the tri-state area.   The degree is held in high regard- there are only about 20 SAF recognized programs in North America.   Graduates receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Forest Technology.

Most Forestry students are enrolled in the Forest Technology Program.  ACM’s Forest Technology Program trains students for the position of Forest Technician.  A forest technician is a mid-management person trained to work with a graduate level professional Forester. A forest technician must be able to work alone, to make decisions, and to supervise work crews in the field.  The program is designed to allow students to gain employment after 4 semesters and an eight-week field program.

Student learning goals include:

  • properly identifying various biological entities that would normally be encountered within the forest ecosystem.
  • quantify the components of a field or forest
  • understand the principles of forest and individual tree protection
  • interpret and assess important components of a forested ecosystem as well as recommend appropriate management actions for that landscape
  • understand the skills necessary to reach potential as a good leader/supervisor.
  • demonstrate a talent for expressing scientific principles in audience appropriate language using a written format.
