Degree Program Options for Programming

You may start with a letter of recognition (LOR) and along the way pick up a certificate as well. If you choose to continue, you may complete your degree with an A.A.S in programming. Always Changing...Always Improving!

The explosive impact of computers and information technology on our everyday lives has generated a need to design and develop new computer programs and opportunities for students. In today's information society, skills in technology and computer studies are essential to success. At Allegany College of Maryland, we have developed a system that will allow a student to advance toward his or her educational goals at his or her own pace. The student may choose to complete a letter of recognition in as little as one semester.

Program Options IconHowever, a student may decide that he or she wants to take more courses in order to complete a one-year certificate or two-year A.A.S. degree. Still, a student may choose to transfer to a four-year institution. Whatever his or her goals, Allegany College of Maryland can accommodate a student's needs. Course Description IconIn addition to our varied programs, Allegany College of Maryland's computer science department has developed a vast array of courses that reflect the multifaceted world of computers. Students can take courses in such things as Java programming, networking, PC repair, web page development, database management, graphics and interactive multimedia to learning advanced concepts and techniques with today's industry-standard, commercial software applications such as Microsoft Excel, Access, Dreamweaver, Coldfusion, just to list a few. Faculty Description IconOur faculty and staff is dedicated to instruction in the computer science field and is committed to our student's success. Faculty in the computer science field at Allegany College of Maryland are highly trained in their particular disciplines and have many years of practical experience in the field as well. In addition, the computer science department at Allegany College of Maryland offers a multitude of training opportunities for its faulty and staff to remain current and up-to-date on new technologies. Because our student-faculty ratio is small compared to larger educational institutions, students have access to instructors for assistance and advising. Career Description IconOne of the most frequently asked questions from our students studying computers is, "Where can I seek employment after graduation?" Allegany College of Maryland's Student Support Center (SSC) has a number of options to help students explore his or her employment interests and opportunities. The Student Support Center offers career development services to students who wish assistance with career planning. The career exploration component of the SSC offers assistance in such areas as:

  • Self-assessment of interests, values, and aptitudes
  • Understanding the world of work utilizing career and occupational information
  • Career decision-making
  • Career Transtion/Job Placement
